This orientation provides an introduction to working with the Volunteer Lawyers Project/Senior Partners for Justice. Led by one of the VLP staff attorneys and the referral coordinator, this orientation provides an in depth look at everything you need to know in beginning your work with our organization. We will touch upon many frequently asked questions like: what types of cases does VLP work with, what it's like to work with interpreters, and where can I get help on this case. Along with that, this training will provide a space for new panel attorneys to ask any questions they may have about the way our organization works, the referral process and anything other questions that may arise. This training is meant to provide an introduction to VLP, our services, and our clients. It will be held the first Monday of every month from 4pm-5pm. Each orientation can accommodate 15 people, so please register early to reserve your spot.

This nuts and bolts class will give participants the tools they need to assist tenants and landlords regarding the eviction process, with an eye toward volunteering at the Lawyer for the Day project at Boston Housing Court. The training will cover the eviction timeline, procedural considerations, and the most common defenses and counterclaims.?

This basic training will focus on how to bring a Petition for the Guardianship of an Adult in the Probate Court. The training will address guardianship of incapacitated persons that are unable to make or communicate decisions due to a medically diagnosed condition. The training will include instruction on how to complete the petition and accompanying pleadings, waive fees and costs, obtain a medical certificate from the incapacitated person's physician, and how to handle issues of service and the bond. This is an excellent area of practice for new attorneys as well as an additional area of practice for attorneys experienced in other areas of law, but unfamiliar with the guardianship practice.

This training will prepare volunteer attorneys to assist low-income, unrepresented litigants in civil collection cases through VLP's Fair Debt Collection Lawyer of the Day project at the Boston Municipal Court.  The training will cover civil procedure and practice at the BMC, Limited Assistance Representation, as well as substantive areas of consumer and fair debt collection law that you will need as a volunteer.  Fair debt collection cases are a great opportunity for lawyers seeking courtroom experience. 

About this project: 

Volunteer attorneys assist low-income debtors and creditors at the Boston Municipal Court in the Brooke Courthouse on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon and 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on a Limited Assistance Representation (LAR) basis.  LAR means that the attorney only represents the client in the proceeding (case management conference, motion, etc.) before the court that day.  The representation begins and ends on the same day.

If, like most lawyers, you have spent time in the courtroom waiting for your case to be heard, you know that there is a lot to be learned from just watching other cases. We have decided to take that experience one step further with a pilot program we are calling "Grand Rounds."

Grand Rounds is an opportunity for a small group of new attorneys and attorneys new to family law to observe in the courtroom for part of a morning and then discuss what they saw with an experienced practitioner. It will also include a guided tour of the Probate and Family Court to introduce group members to the various players that may be involved in a family law case.

Participation in Grand Rounds is limited to attorneys who are active in VLP/Senior Partners pro bono cases or projects. We plan to offer these sessions every other month in 2012.?

The group will gather on the 3rd floor of the Brooke Courthouse outside the Registry of Probate.

This orientation provides an introduction to working with the Volunteer Lawyers Project/Senior Partners for Justice. Led by one of the VLP staff attorneys and the referral coordinator, this orientation provides an in depth look at everything you need to know in beginning your work with our organization. We will touch upon many frequently asked questions like: what types of cases does VLP work with, what it's like to work with interpreters, and where can I get help on this case. Along with that, this training will provide a space for new panel attorneys to ask any questions they may have about the way our organization works, the referral process and anything other questions that may arise. This training is meant to provide an introduction to VLP, our services, and our clients. It will be held the first Monday of every month from 4pm-5pm. This basic training will focus on how to file a Petition for the Guardianship of a Minor Child in the Probate Court. This is an excellent area of practice for new attorneys as well as an additional area of practice for attorneys experienced in other areas of law, but unfamiliar with the guardianship practice. This training will prepare volunteer attorneys to assist low-income, unrepresented litigants in civil collection cases through VLP's Fair Debt Collection Lawyer of the Day project at the Boston Municipal Court.  The training will cover civil procedure and practice at the BMC, Limited Assistance Representation, as well as substantive areas of consumer and fair debt collection law that you will need as a volunteer.  Fair debt collection cases are a great opportunity for lawyers seeking courtroom experience. 

About this project: 

Volunteer attorneys assist low-income debtors and creditors at the Boston Municipal Court in the Brooke Courthouse on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon and 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. on a Limited Assistance Representation (LAR) basis.  LAR means that the attorney only represents the client in the proceeding (case management conference, motion, etc.) before the court that day.  The representation begins and ends on the same day.

If, like most lawyers, you have spent time in the courtroom waiting for your case to be heard, you know that there is a lot to be learned from just watching other cases. We have decided to take that experience one step further with a pilot program we are calling "Grand Rounds."

Grand Rounds is an opportunity for a small group of new attorneys and attorneys new to family law to observe in the courtroom for part of a morning and then discuss what they saw with an experienced practitioner. It will also include a guided tour of the Probate and Family Court to introduce group members to the various players that may be involved in a family law case.

Participation in Grand Rounds is limited to attorneys who are active in VLP/Senior Partners pro bono cases or projects. We plan to offer these sessions every other month in 2012.?

The group will gather on the 3rd floor of the Brooke Courthouse outside the Registry of Probate.
